Overhead Noise

The window rattled like a loose tooth

when it hit. One flash, too bright,

then a crack that felt like truth

split the quiet of the night.

A small frame jumped and then it fell,

photograph of someone's smile,

down on the rug. You can't quell

such a thing for a little while.

My thoughts, they just flew everywhere,

like old receipts in a sudden gust.

Standing still, breathing air,

made of nothing, made of dust.
