Surface Tension

The back of the cupboard

held a copper thing.

Not bright, not warm,

no song to sing.

It was almost black,

where light once played.

A deep, uneven crack

the years had made.

No polish, just the air

had worked its way

until it sat there,

changed, and here to stay.
