Tape was needed lost from sight

Tape was needed, lost from sight,

so to the drawer, with little light,

I dug through pens, and dried-out glue,

old paper clips, and things I knew

no use for now. Then, in my hand,

a cold, small disc, across the land

of tangled wires, it somehow fell.

A tarnished button, cast its spell.

Brass, with loops, long since undone.

Its coppery smell beneath the sun

that cut the dust. A uniform,

from years ago, a different storm.

It sat there heavy, in my palm.
