A sudden jolt —

A sudden jolt —

my elbow meets counter edge,

a shout of pain,

bright red blossoming beneath thin skin.

It throbs with every bend,

a small rebellion, aching

where I never looked before,

a bump swollen with quiet stubbornness.

That careless clash, the brief betrayal—

a body part I trust to tuck away,

now marked, complaining in the dull ache

that hums like a muted alarm.
