Lapstone

Her little head, a sudden stone,

Heavy against my thigh, not my own.

The movie credits rolled and then,

Just quiet breathing, starting again.

I tried to shift, to move my leg,

But her small body, a sturdy peg,

Held fast, a trust I couldn't break.

So much to carry, for goodness sake.

A warmth seeped in, a damp, soft heat,

Her gentle snore, almost sweet.

This perfect burden, pure and deep,

A solemn promise I must keep.
