Rearview

The nurse pointed a cold finger

at a place I’ve never seen.

How long has that been there? she asked,

like I was supposed to keep a ledger

of the dark spots on my own dark side.

Now I’m twisting in the bathroom

until my spine pops,

trying to find the coffee-stain shape

someone else’s hands have known

better than my own eyes ever will.
