The Thaw

The shout is still hanging in the hallway,

trapped in the dust of the baseboards.

In the kitchen, the glass is tipped,

and one cube has escaped the rim.

It sits on the black laminate,

crackling as the heart of it gives way.

A gray ring of water is growing,

creeping toward the edge of the sink,

silent as a secret kept too long.
