The steam fogs my glasses until I’m blind.

I stand over the stainless steel

and sip the broth directly from the bowl

because the table feels too wide tonight.


Yellow grease circles drift,

staring up like tiny, unblinking eyes

counting my breaths.


It’s just salt and warm water.

It’s not enough to fix the draft

coming from the hallway.
