Exit Interview

I saw him through the deli glass,

watching the busy hours pass.

He’s sitting in my swivel chair

while I’m just standing, breathing air.

I found the pen inside the wash,

a plastic bit of corporate dross.

I pressed my thumb against the tip

and felt the dried-out plastic slip.

A smudge of blue across my skin,

where the work ends and I begin.
