The sun is a witness I didn't invite

The sun is a witness I didn't invite,

slanted and cruel in the Tuesday light.

It shows the bills on the table, a stack of the gray,

where the ink and the interest are drifting away.

I blow on the paper and watch the cloud rise,

the grit of my life stinging my eyes.

The ceiling fan wears a thick winter coat

of lint and dead skin, a lump in the throat.
