Settled Accounts

The ConEd letter is a jagged yellow bill.

I reach under the bed for the old Pioneer

that’s been sitting there, perfectly still,

the physical record of every passing year.

It’s a gray, velvet coat I didn't buy,

a sediment of things I’ve let slide.

I drag one finger across the mesh

and see the black plastic hiding inside.
