The light turned green but the world stayed still

The light turned green but the world stayed still

for the bundle of gray on the concrete sill.

The pinstripes and wingtips all pivot and veer,

avoiding the tiny, cold silence right here.

They’re talking of margins and the end of the year,

stepping over a throat that no longer feels fear.

The neck is a shimmer, a bright, oily green,

the richest damn thing that this sidewalk has seen.
