I was looking for a wire or a thin piece of metal

I was looking for a wire, or a thin piece of metal

to poke the reset hole on the back of the router.

Instead, I found the 1994 Grand Opening

of a place that sold lumber and drywall

before the big box moved in by the freeway.

The plastic fob is cracked, a jaundiced yellow,

holding a key with a jagged, rusted spine.

It doesn't fit the front door or the shed

or any lock I’ve touched in a decade.

It’s just heavy. A small anchor for a boat

that sank before it ever left the yard.
