Shortfall

The morning light is a thin wedge

by the window, so I shove the wood.

The orange cable goes taut,

a sudden, plastic snap

that kills the lamp mid-glow.

The plug sits on the floor now,

three silver teeth bared in the dust.

I’m three inches shy of the sun,

tethered to a wall that won't give,

measuring the distance I can’t close.
