Stall

The grocery store turned off the big front sign,

and I’m still sitting in this car of mine.

The engine ticks a slow and steady beat,

cooling down against the empty street.

An SUV rolls by with a heavy sound,

pinning a soda can against the ground.

The metal crunches with a hollow snap,

while I sit here caught in my own trap.

I don't want to go inside and see the hall,

so I’ll just watch the shadows climb the wall.
