Unearned Tuesday

The street is empty of everything but leaves.

The neighbors are all gone,

locked into their cubicles and their commutes,

leaving me here with my mismatched socks

and a cup of coffee that’s mostly steam.

I thought the world would feel heavier

without the 9-to-5 to hold it down.

But the sky is the same flat, careless blue.

My key ring is light, three brass teeth missing,

and the only thing I have to do

is decide which way to walk.
