The Narrow Way

We do this thing—this walk in our socks,

shifting our weight like we’re steering around rocks.

The carpet is thin and smells like old tea,

and I don't look at him and he doesn't look at me.

A sliver of yellow light cuts the floor,

bleeding out from under the bathroom door.

We brush shoulders in the dark by the sink,

too tired to speak, too hollow to think.
