I try to walk across the floor

I try to walk across the floor

without a single sound or beat.

I reach the handle of the door

with heavy iron on my feet.

But something sharp is caught below,

a jagged piece of sapphire light.

It grinds into the wood I know

and screams into the quiet night.

The blue is wedged within the tread,

a stubborn thing I’ve learned to dread.
