The Debt

I asked for the cash with my head hanging low,

expecting a lecture on how I should spend.

But he didn't ask why and he didn't say no;

he just hit a button to help me amend.

The screen gave a chirp and a flash of bright green,

a checkmark that glows like a chemical wound.

It’s the kindest assault that I’ve ever seen,

leaving me quiet and deeply marooned.

I wanted a fight or a reason to curse,

some friction to justify being this small.

But the money is sitting right there in the purse,

and I have no anger to lean on at all.
