The dresser left a deep dent in the rug

The dresser left a deep dent in the rug

when I shoved it aside to find a spark.

I was looking for a place to push the plug,

to kill the heavy pressure of the dark.

The outlet is buried in ten coats of paint,

a beige, crusty scab on the lower wall.

The slots are two slits, narrow and faint,

like eyes that have seen nothing at all.

The lamp cord is short by a desperate inch.

I tug at the wire until the copper groans,

but the wall won't give and the metal won't flinch,

leaving me here with the dust and the stones.
