Alley White

The radiator bangs a heavy, iron beat

while ice begins to slick the empty street.

I haven’t left the hallway or the room,

just watching how the winter starts to bloom.

The neighbor’s dumpster, hunched and stained with grit,

is losing every jagged edge of it.

The orange rust that ate the metal through

is buried now beneath a crust of new.
