Playing Dumb

She slides the paper across the kitchen wood,

explaining things I’ve always understood.

Her thumb is white against the envelope’s edge,

pushing me closer to the broken ledge.

I blink and tilt my head to act the part,

hiding the heavy beating of my heart.

The red ink of the stamp begins to spread,

staining the table like a secret bled.
