Misdiagnosis

The yearbook shows a frantic bird,

all hollow bones and frantic eye.

I remember the most jarring word

thrown like a stone, a clumsy lie.

Behind the gym, the copper heat

ran down my lip, a hot, dark stream.

He called me beautiful, a feat

of fiction in a jagged dream.
