The screen on my phone did a stutter and flick

The screen on my phone did a stutter and flick,

showing a moment that makes me feel sick.

We were twenty and loud in the backyard of May,

tossing the furniture out of the way.

The light from the bonfire was orange and mean,

reflecting off cans that were silver and lean.

I’m laughing so hard that my jaw is a hole,

while we’re burning the things that we couldn't control.

It was funny as hell when the legs caught the spark,

a wooden skeleton bright in the dark.

But I know what that chair cost his mother to buy,

and I can't find the punchline, no matter how hard I try.
