The Sound at Night

The quiet of the house

amplified by a sound.

A sharp, sudden interruption

that makes the air profound.

Waking up fast,

breath caught in the throat.

The hallway light blinks red,

a small, insistent note.

It vibrates the dark room,

this noise I can't ignore.

Is something wrong,

or just the battery’s chore?

A slow, tired plea,

a mechanical drone.

But in the heavy dark,

I feel completely alone.
