I saw a wall today

I saw a wall today,

the color of old toast,

something about its rough face

reminded me.

The grit. The tiny pockmarks.

Not smooth, not yielding.

A coolness that would seep

through a shirt I can’t recall,

leaned there,

waiting.

The phantom sensation

on my skin,

a memory of pressure,

held.
