Winter Noise

The pipes woke up with a violent sound,

A clanking start, a metal sigh,

My morning paper hit the ground,

While heat began to crawl nearby.

It groans and spits, a metal lung,

That shakes the walls and fills the air.

A song of winter, roughly sung,

A constant, gnawing, low despair.
