Rain drums down then stops—

Rain drums down, then stops—

a puddle shimmers beneath the streetlamp,

rings of oil curl like spilled dreams,

a kaleidoscope of colors

pressed thin against cracked asphalt.

I step slow, watching the light bend,

a slick mirror of broken things,

the night leaking oily rainbows

while the curb crumbles away,

and something slips beneath the surface,

a slow slide into dark.
