That Snap in the Dark

Fingers shaking, I strike the match—

a sharp crack, too loud

in the quiet room.

It hisses and dies before the flame

can catch, a breath stolen back

by darkness pressing in.

The burnt sulfur smell lingers,

a bitter ghost on my tongue,

reminding me how fire

can start so easy,

then vanish

like it never was.
