What I Sounded Like

I heard my voice before I heard my name—

2:47 AM, the timestamp clear.

That wasn't me. I couldn't claim

the person speaking, loose, sincere

about promises to someone

who'd asked me not to call.

I sounded like it was fun,

like I could change it all.

The waveform looked like proof

of how far I'd fallen—

each wavering peak a roof

I'd built then let crumble.

I didn't recognize the man

who said he understood,

who made his stupid plan

sound good.

I still don't.
