What I Kept

Two years and I'd mostly stopped.

Then the hardware store.

Fluorescent. The bulb aisle.

Him.

Both of us reaching

for the same box of LEDs,

the same size, same wattage—

neither of us finishing.

He said hey.

Moved to the next aisle.

The box sat where we'd left it.

I took it after a minute.

Drove home.

Screwed in the bulb.

The room came on exactly

like a room.

I don't know what I expected.
