Drove past St Michael's today

Drove past St. Michael's today,

just a glance through the window

of the car, but the light

was right.

That plain, tall arched glass,

letting in a dusty stripe of sun

onto the vacant pews.

I remembered the smell of old wood,

of damp stone, a faint ghost

of frankincense.

It was a comfort, once.

A heavy, solid thing.

Now, just a building with a familiar roof,

its quiet humming

not for me.
