I told them that the theater was packed,

That we all laughed until our ribs were sore.

It’s easier to keep the lie intact

Than admit I sat alone beside the door.


I bought two sodas just to play the part,

And threw the extra out before the end.

I keep the ticket stub to break my heart,

The only solid, paper-colored friend.
