The button sticks under the thumb

The button sticks under the thumb

from years of grit and sweat.

The plastic casing’s turned to gum

but it hasn't failed me yet.

I found it in the junk drawer pile

behind the batteries and string.

I haven’t run a decent mile

or won a single thing.

But the numbers blink in neon green

counting down the hollow night.

The only witness I have seen

in the kitchen’s yellow light.
