Dead Air

I moved the dresser to find a dropped pen

and saw the envelope stuck to the wood,

heavy with grey lint and the ghost of a mood

I thought would burn the house down then.

You posted today about a stainless toaster

and how the crumb tray is easy to clean.

It makes the five pages of what I really mean

look like a bad flyer for a local coaster.

I can see the sharp ruts on the back of the sheet

where the ballpoint dug in like a knife.

I was so busy documenting our life

I forgot that the ink wouldn't make it complete.
