Another Wednesday another week

Another Wednesday, another week

dragged out like an old sheet.

The fluorescent hum of the store aisle,

my hand just hovering over

the instant noodles, the kind

with the bright, fake cheese.

It's not good food. Everyone knows.

But the steam from the plastic bowl,

the way the thin strands soften

into a predictable mush.

It’s a specific kind of surrender,

the kind that sticks to the roof

of your mouth, a bland, warm promise

of nothing new, nothing demanding.
