Something Like an Answer

The board by the closet gives that knock,

hollow, half an inch of give.

I came home past midnight last night

and stopped—that's just how I live

now. Waiting. Coat still on.

Listening for the voice from down the hall,

the low you're back? Eleven months.

The fridge came on. The dark against the wall

sat where it always sits.

I held my breath.

Nobody called.

The fridge noise part is the only thing I really got.

That loose floorboard by the closet sounds really annoying.

Haha yeah it definitely is. I’ve just gotten used to it being there.

True, eventually you just learn where to step.
