The Face

I told them something true and watched their face turn cold,

just a small shift in their eyes, a story left untold—

the exact moment when disbelief took the place

of trust, written all across their face.

It's been days and I can still see it clear,

the moment they stopped believing me, the atmosphere

went quiet, nothing left to say

to that kind of disbelief, no way

to convince someone who's already decided

that what you're saying is a lie, they've derided

the truth before you even finished speaking.

So I left it there, floating in the silence,

the truth and their doubt, an act of violence,

sitting together like two people who will never be friends.

I don't know what I expected.

I don't know why I told them at all.
