The Drop

The suction cups finally gave up.

A smudge of grey rubber on the glass

is all that’s left of the diner.

A sparrow landed on the brick ledge,

tilting its head at the vacuum.

I should go down to the alley

and pick up the cracked plastic,

but it’s cold, and the bird

has already flown toward the dumpster.
