The Dark Came Back

I reached for the flashlight when the power went out.

The beam was weak already,

weaker when I found the fuse box.

The yellow glow barely reached the wall.

My hand in front of it barely cast a shadow—

just a smudge, a suggestion of my hand.

I pressed the button again.

The light didn't brighten.

It just got more honest about being gone.
