It fell from the pages of a library book

It fell from the pages of a library book,

a face that demanded a second look.

A woman in denim by a chain-link fence,

the kind of history that makes no sense.

The edges are scalloped, the colors are flat,

she’s wearing a scarf and a lopsided hat.

There’s a thumbprint smudge on the corner of sky,

and I don't want to know her, and I don't know why.
