Sweet Nothing

Found the prayer card, tucked into a book,

bookmarking a page I never quite finished.

The words were still there, if you took a look,

but the meaning, somehow, had diminished.

Like a sugar cube dropped in a glass of tea,

I remember it solid, defined, so sweet.

Now it's just a faint swirl, barely there to see,

a translucent shadow, a quiet defeat.

It didn't shatter, didn't break with a sound,

just thinned out, little by little, day by day.

Leaving behind a clear, brown, empty ground,

and a language I no longer know how to say.

Just water, now. No sweetness left inside.
