The Cut

Two seconds. That's all it took.

The saw went through the branch

like it was never attached to anything.

The teeth did their work—

I watched them separate the wood.

My neighbor held the branch steady.

I pushed the blade.

When it fell, it was two pieces.

Not one thing becoming two.

But two things that had always been separate,

finally divorced.

The tree didn't even bleed.
