What Happens When You Step Away

I made a drink and left it.

Got ready for the day,

checked my phone,

came back to find the ice

had started to give up.

I sat and watched it.

The corner melting first,

the edges soft and blurred,

the cube getting smaller

with every minute I wasn't looking.

By the time I picked it up,

it was half the size.

The drink was mostly water now.

Still cold, but less of everything.

That's how things go sometimes.

You step away for five minutes

and come back to find

something's already become

less than what it was.
