I found it in a drawer under some old bills

I found it in a drawer under some old bills.

The expiration date was seven years ago.

The photo on it was me—younger, smaller, somehow thinner,

looking directly at the camera

like I had somewhere to be.

I pulled it out and looked at it for a while.

It felt impossible that it was still mine.

That I'd held onto it this long

without using it.

So I checked the library website.

Turns out they renew automatically if you use the card.

You don't have to do anything.

You don't have to remember.

You don't have to show up in person.

It just keeps renewing itself in the background,

waiting for you to come back.

The card is still valid.

After seven years of not going,

of not checking anything out,

of not thinking about it,

it was just sitting there,

renewing itself,

waiting for me to remember it existed.

I put it on my desk.

I don't know if I'll go.

But at least now I know the option is still there.
