I ordered the drink because everyone ordered.

I laughed when the laugh had the right kind of weight.

I asked the right questions, stayed inside the bordered

version of myself—the bar, the late

half-hour where you angle toward the door.

I drove to the car. Checked the phone. The screen

said so great seeing you!! and what I felt for

a second was nothing. Specifically. Clean

the way a surface is clean before you touch it.

The parking lot had that aquarium light—

greenish, suspended, everything caught in

something that wasn't quite night.

I sat and thought: I got it exactly right.

All of it. Every pivot, every question.

I got it exactly right.

So great seeing you.

Two exclamation points.
