The Day You Became a Stranger

Steam curled from my chipped cup

like your breath on a cold morning,

a ghost of the words we never finished.

Your shadow caught at the counter,

too far for a hello,

too close for the comfort of distance.

The burnt espresso sharp in the air,

bitterness like the space between us

that no coffee could fill,

not even the one we used to share.
