Synthetic

The car sat in the sun until the seats

smelled like a burning shower curtain.

I tried to fold the jacket on the floor,

but the vinyl fought back, stiff and uncertain.

It crackled like a lung filled with grit,

stuck to itself with a stubborn, gray glue.

The price tag left a square of tack

where the store tried to prove it was new.
