They Just Left

They got up from the table

without asking if I was coming.

Just left their chairs empty

and walked to class

like I wasn't sitting there

with half my food still on the plastic tray.

The fluorescent light made it all worse.

The empty chairs.

The way nobody looked back.

This is what rough feels like.

It's not crying in the bathroom.

It's not dramatic.

It's just sitting alone

at a table

while other people have plans

that don't include you.

It's listening to them talk

about the movie, the time,

the place they're meeting,

and knowing

that the where

will not be

near you.

It's finishing your lunch alone

because there's nothing else to do

except eat

and wait

for the bell

to ring.

It's knowing that tomorrow

they'll do it again.
