The Boxed Life

The call came, sudden.

Just like it came for me.

That bland smile from HR, a woman

with polished nails, so free

of any real feeling.

My stapler I forgot.

That empty box, the chilling

air, the memory I fought.

It’s not the work. Not the money.

It’s the way the key card went

heavy, then useless. Funny,

how quickly you’re un-meant.

How quickly you learn

you were just a seat filler.

Your world can burn,

and they’ll hire another killer.
